COVID-19, short for Coronavirus Disease 2019, is caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has since become a global pandemic. COVID-19 primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and can also spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the face. Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications (e.g., acetaminophen) to relieve symptoms. Hospitalization may be required for oxygen therapy, supportive care, and treatment of complications.
